Cartography

Benefitting from a lifetime of exposure to the topic from having a lecturer in the subject as a parent, Euan has produced award-winning mapping for several clients and finds that there is a lot of overlap between good graphic design & good cartography.

Helensburgh Town Map – Argyll & Bute Council, Austin Smith Lord, Visit Helensburgh

Starting with a commission from Visit Helensburgh in 2013 to produce a tourism map with exaggerated features, by the end of the year the design had caught the eye of a project manager at Argyll & Bute Council who was responsible for a major public realm upgrade in the town. As part of this they would be installing two monoliths with a town map on one side and a public information cabinet on the reverse.
Due to the larger size and changing utilisation of the map, certain alterations were made to allow for greater accuracy and identifying extra locations of note beyond those of interest to tourists, although the exaggerated character of the map were retained.
The original map design was awarded a Commendation in the New Mapmaker category in the 2013 British Cartographic Society & National Geographic Society Awards.

NewsBase

NewsBase was an international oil & gas sector news publication, producing specialised in-depth reports on industry developments around the world. The work consisted of amalgamating (sometimes conflicting) information from a variety of sources to produce a single coherent map (or series of maps) to accompany an article or specialist one-off publication. My work included the production of over 100 maps, charts & infographics for them as a freelancer from 2014 up till publishing ceased in 2019.

Glasgow University

I was approached by the Vice-Principal of International Engagement at the University of Glasgow to produce a series of maps for use in communications and presentations that clearly displayed and listed all the university’s academic partnerships. Stylistically there were strict requirements to implement the university’s brand guidelines.
